On this edition of Parallax Views, I speak with author Douglas Lain about his new novel Bash Bash Revolution (Night Shade Books, 2018).
Bash Bash Revolution is a coming-of-age tale about the alienated teenager Matthew Munson. A recent high school drop out who spends much of his free time playings the video game Bash Bash Revolution, Mathew struggles with an estranged relationship to his father, an eccentric NSA employee obsessed with perfecting the human race through technology, while watching the rest of his community become addicted to the augmeneted reality games created by his father's AI, Bucky. Things get especially weird for Mathew when his father randomly re-enters his life and Bucky's influence over the broader community becomes increasingly more pronounced in decidedly dystopian ways. Set against the backdrop of paranoias surrounding the Trump Presidency and the possibility of a new Cold War, Bash Bash Revolution is a madcap page-turner sure to please fans of video games, dystopian sci-fi, and even philosophy.
Douglas's previous works include the magical realist novel Billy Moon (Tor Books; 2013) and the Philip K. Dick award nominee After the Saucers Landed (Night Shade Books, 2015). In addition to his work as a writer, Douglas is also a publisher at Zero Books, where he also hosts the popular Zero Squared podcast, covering issues related to culture, society, and politics from critical perspectives.
