Modern Mythology Presents
On this edition of Parallax Views, writer, visual artist, and "(mostly) reformed hooligan" Brain Shaughnessy tells us about his two recent essays published on Modern Mythology, "Liv and Maddie and Metamodernism" and "To the Bone: The Loss and Importance of Anthony Bourdain".
The first portion of the interview of the show deals with the essay "Live and Maddie and Metamodernism". At first glance a Disney Channel TV show may seem an odd fit for not only the Parallax Views podcast but also Brian Shaughnessy himself, who came out of the hardcore punk scene. But Brian makes a good case for this kids show, through its surrealist/absurdist humor and its possible "metamodernist" themes, being worthy of analysis. During this segment we also discuss the issue of sincerity vs. cynicism in modern culture and the positive feedback Brian has got for this essay, including from the show's star Dove Cameron.
The second portion of the conversation delves into Brian's tribute to celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, often described as "The Hunter S. Thompson of the Kitchen", and his tragic passing. Brian explains Bourdain's passing provoked an outpouring of mourning as well as the significance and legacy of Bourdain's contribution to American culture. The kinship Brian felt with Bourdain leads to a very frank and honest discussion about personal regrets, including Brian's own, and the difficult issue of suicide.
